History

Intent

‘History is all around us and you…are living in some of it’ M J Colewood.  What could be more so than now!

Our aim at Hawridge and Cholesbury is to ensure our children, eager to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world.  We want our pupils to be fascinated in and curious about the distant and recent past by asking perceptive questions, thinking critically, weighing up evidence, sifting arguments and developing judgements: skills that are prized in adult life.  History provides a means of pupils developing respect for real people and their lives as well as giving them a sense of identity within a contemporary world.  Our aim is for children to aspire to learn, understand and remember more and more about the past; developing new and challenging skills along the way through high quality history teaching.

A variety of FRESH teaching strategies bring the history curriculum to life such as topic days, school trips, role plays, collaborative learning tasks, videos, guest speakers, stories and memories as well as cross curricular activities.  Our extensive school grounds frequently become the backdrop to the Norman invasion or Prehistoric living allowing pupils to experience history for themselves.
